Govt for stern action to stop passengers’ harassment

State minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday said the government would take a tough line on harassment of passengers at Dhaka River Port Terminal.
"I've received information that there were reports of harassment of passengers at Sadarghat (launch terminal). We'll take stringent measures to deal with that (harassment)."
Mr Khalid said as he was talking to the members of Shipping Reporters Forum at his secretariat office in the city.
"As per my directives, all illegal makeshifts shops around the launch terminal were evicted."
Mr Khalid said he recently received information that passengers were being harassed again at the terminal.
He is expected to make an unscheduled visit to the terminal any time soon with intent to stop the menace of passengers' harassment.
According to the state minister, the government has undertaken projects for ensuring smooth waterway connectivity between the capital and the remote coastal areas like Hatiya, Sandwip and Kutubdia.
He said the initiatives were also underway for the beautification of all the banks of the rivers surrounding the capital, Dhaka.
Mr Khalid said the Bangladesh River Conservation Commission was also asked to form committees at district level, aiming to create awareness among people of the need to protect the rivers.
