Awami League (AL) acting President Zillur Rahman has demanded of the government to recognise Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as Father of the Nation and to release detained AL chief Sheikh Hasina within this month (August).
"Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will have to be recognised as the Father of the Nation within this August. And the government will also have to free Sheikh Hasina during the same time," Zillur Rahman said this while speaking at a press briefing in the city Tuesday, reports UNB.
However, Zillur Rahman did not say what they would do if the government does not meet their demands within the given time.
He also asked the government to declare August 15 as the national mourning day.
Zillur thanked the Chief Adviser, President and the Army Chief for their decision to visit the Mazar of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tongipara in Gopalganj.
He also called upon the people irrespective of religion, party and opinion to pray for the eternal peace of Bangabandhu and his family members.
AL presidium member Motia Chowdhury who was present at the press briefing alleged that police removed a pandal in the city's Dhanmondi area, set up for voluntary blood donation programme arranged by Bangabandhu Trust on the occasion of Bangabandhu's 32nd death anniversary.
Among others, AL presidium Abdur Razzak, central leaders Latif Siddiqui, Yafes Osman, Habibur Rahman Siraji, Subed Ali Bhuiyan and Dipu Moni were present at the press briefing.
Meanwhile, Zillur Rahman in a press statement Tuesday stated that their detained leader Sheikh Hasina must be freed from the jail through legal process.
"Sheikh Hasin has been arrested on false charges. We must free her through legal fight," he mentioned in the statement.
Rahman said the government did not allow Hasina to stand by the flood-affected people, but she, from inside the jail urged the party leaders and activists to work for the flood victims.
He urged the party leaders and activists to work hard to build Bangladesh as a modern and prosperous country.
Meanwhile, the AL has chalked out various programmes to observe the 32nd death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman today (Wednesday).
The day-long programmes would begin at 5:30am with wearing of black badges by party leaders and workers and hoisting of black flags at Bangabandhu Bhaban, party central office and the offices of its front organisations.
The national and party flags would fly at half-mast on the occasion.
The other programmes include placing wreathes and offering Munajat at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Bhaban at 8am, laying flowers and holding Milad Mahfil at 8:30am at the Banani graveyard where other victims of the Bangabandhu family were buried.
Besides, AL would arrange Munajat at mosques across the country after Zohr prayers and distribute relief materials among flood-hit people as part of the programmes.
An AL delegation, led by its central leader Abdul Latif Siddiqui and Faruk Khan, will place wreathes and offer Munajat at the Mazar of Bangabandhu at Tungipara, Gopalganj, stated a party press release Tuesday.
