Govt guidelines for environ-friendly ship breaking industry on cards

Industries Minister Dilip Barua said Sunday the government will formulate policy guidelines for an environment-friendly ship breaking industry, officials said. "The government will formulate guidelines for protecting the interests of labourers and environment of the ship breaking industry," Dilip Barua said when a delegation of different environment organisations called on him at his office in the capital. He said the government attaches top priority to industrialisation that can also save the green environment. "The government can't allow environmental pollution in the name of ship breaking industry," he said. The minister urged the environmentalists to come forward with suggestions so that the government can formulate necessary guidelines for the ship breaking industry. The environmentalists called upon the government to permit ship breakers to import waste-free ships and follow the example of Chinese ship yards for the ship breaking industry. They also suggested the government to give permanent identity cards and training to labourers and declare separate wages for them. Secretary of Industries Ministry KH Masud Siddique, President of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) Syeda Rizwana Hasan, President of Nijera Kori Khushi Kabir, Chairman of Poribesh Bachao Andolon Abu Naser Khan and President of Chittagong Shipbreaking Sramik Samobai Samity KM Shahidullah, among others, were present.
