Govt has various plans to keep capital free from water-logging: Nanak
Wednesday, 29 July 2009
State Minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabir Nanak said Tuesday unplanned growth of the capital city is the main cause of water logging that creates untold sufferings to the city dwellers after rainfall, reports UNB.
The State Minister said the government is working with short, medium and long term measures for the drainage of rainwater and keeping the city livable.
"But it's not possible for the government to resolve all the problems overnight," Mr Nanak said, adding that the present government has various plans to keep Dhaka City free from water-logging and draining out water using pumping machines, is one of the short term plans.
Mr Nanak made the remarks while talking to the journalists at the Dhaka WASA head office at Karwan Bazar Tuesday.
Monday night's incessant rainfall has inundated many areas of the capital with most roads under knee to waist deep water.
The State Minister said the city got flooded with some 333 millilitre rainfall Monday night and created heavy pressure on the pumping stations. The low lying areas, especially the slums at Adabar in Mohammadpur, have gone under water.
He said the Dhaka WASA officials started working to drain out the rainwater using the water outlet pumps and it is expected that they would be able to remove water-logging within 2-3 hours.
Nanak mentioned that there was some 341 millilitre rainfall in the capital city on September 13 in 2004 and water logging continued for nine days.
The Dhaka WASA officials informed that four water outlet stations-in Kamalapur, Kalyanpur, Dholaikhal and Mohammadpur embankment areas-are working ceaselessly to drain out the rainwater.
