Govt launches OMS of rice

The government Wednesday launched the rationing of rice at Tk 28 per kg under Open Market Sale (OMS) across the country aiming to prevent any further hike in prices of the foodstuff before and during the holy month of Ramadan.

The OMS operation will remain open everyday excepting Friday. A person will get three kilograms of rice a day and not more than 18 kilograms a week.

Molla Waheduzzaman, secretary to the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management, inaugurated the OMS activities at Palasi crossing in the city on the day.

While inaugurating the programme, Molla Waheduzzaman said : "The OMS operation will help stabilise the prices of the staple food in the local market."

He urged the government agencies to monitor the OMS operation so that none could indulge in any unethical practices while operating the rationing activities.

He also inaugurated OMS operation at the city's Link Road.

A total of 7141 authorised dealers will implement the OMS operation across the country, according to the food ministry.

Dealers belonging to six city corporations, poura areas of Narayanganj, Narshingdi and Gazipur will distribute 765 kilograms every day while others will sell 510 kilograms a day.

Some 945 dealers in the city will sell rice through 25 trucks each carrying three tonnes.
