The government is likely to withdraw income tax imposed on the wages of teachers of public universities from the current financial year, sources said.
The teachers of public universities have been protesting against the decision to bring them under the tax net for long.
Muhammad Ibrahim Kabir, director of Finance and Accounts Division of the University Grants Commission (UGC), said that the National Board of Revenue (NBR) had informed the commission verbally that the government is willing to rescind its decision to impose income tax on govt. varsity teachers.
He told the FE, "An NBR high-up informed the regulatory body that it will issue a letter regarding tax issue soon".
Mr Kabir said that "they will discuss the issue at the finance committee meeting today (Sunday) and the final decision will be taken at the meeting of the UGC that will be held on Wednesday next.
President of Teachers' Association of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dr Zoynul Abedin said that the income of the public university teachers is poor compared to other neighbouring countries like India and Pakistan.
"We have demanded several times to exempt us from the tax-net as our facilities are at an unsatisfactory level, he said.
