The government is likely to raise dealers' commission on sale of rice in remote areas under the food-friendly programme to make it more effective and time-befitting, officials said.
The food ministry has already sent a proposal to the finance ministry, seeking its consent to raise dealers' commission to Tk 2.5 per kg in plain area, Tk 3.0 per kg in haor area and Tk 3.50 per kg in Hill Tracts, they added.
At present, dealers get Tk 1.5 as commission on sale of rice. But they will get Tk 2.50, Tk 3.0 and Tk 3.50 as operating costs for selling of rice per kg if the proposal is finally implemented, a food ministry official said.
In this regard, the food ministry has recently sought consent from the finance ministry, he also mentioned.
Earlier, Directorate General of Food has requested the food ministry to take necessary steps to increase dealers' operating profits at union level, he added. The government will provide the dealers with around Tk 750 million more as subsidy annually if new commission rate is offered to them, he added.
