Govt loses revenue from sand, stone extraction in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Jan 27: The government is losing a huge sum of money in revenue from sand, rock and stone extraction from Dimla and Jaldhaka Upazila in the district.
The extracted materials are being supplied to different region of the country. The lose due to non-implementation of fundamental rules and regulations for the extraction of sand and rock from Khas and land having personal entitlement and possession. It is also alleged that the government is deprived of royalty.
Sources said there is vast deposit of those materials in the upazilas. Meanwhile panic has been prevailing among the people of Dimla and Jaldhaka as illegal stone and sand extraction has created several underground trap created by deep hollows there. Local people alleged that a section of unscrupulous people were extracting sand and rock by using heavy drill dredger machines from a depth of 70-80 feet below ground ignoring the government ban.
Sources said in some land subsidence incidence one person died and many others were injured seriously. However local upazila administration conducted drives by forming mobile court and fined some illegal extractors and confiscated dredging machines but still some others are engaged in the same trade when they get any opportunity by concealing government authority.
