Govt may scrap 12 gateway operators\\\' licences

Khairul Islam | Sunday, 5 July 2015

The government may revoke the licences of 12 international internet gateway (IIG) operators as they failed to pay their annual licence fees by June 18, BTRC sources said.
The plan came as the telecom regulator failed to recover the outstanding licence fees from the gateway operators despite repeated reminders, they said.
A senior official of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) said the commission has already served show-cause notices on four operators, such as, Mango Teleservice Limited, Maxnet Online Limited, Earth Telecommunications Limited and Delta Infocom Limited.
Other operators are: Abir Telecommunications Limited, Fiber@Home Limited, Delta Infocom Limited, Greenland Technology Limited, 1Asia Alliance Communication Limited, Rego Communication Limited, Coronet Communication Limited, Apple Communication Limited Integrated Business System  and Solution Limited, Peerex Networks Limited and FM Spectrum Limited.
Although Legal and Licence Division of the BTRC gave an ultimatum to 19 operators to pay their dues by June 18, only 6 operators responded positively, an official said preferring anonymity.
The official said the relevant department recommended cancellation of the operating lincences of the operators and taking actions against the firms.
Earlier, the telecom regulator had rejected an appeal from the Mango Telecom to pay its dues in installment.
The international gateway operators also need to pay around Tk 95 million in revenue sharing to the BTRC between April, 2013 and March 2015.
