Govt may send me to jail: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP's processions in capital tomorrow
FE REPORT | Friday, 8 September 2023
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir apprehended that the government might send him to jail within the next one and a half months.
"My assumption is that like Aman Ullah Aman, I might be sent to jail within the next one and a half months. This is because the government is hatching conspiracy to punish those who are calling upon the government to leave power and go," he said.
He expressed the apprehension in a discussion at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital on Thursday.
The discussion was organised on the occasion of unveiling the cover of a book - '90's mass upsurge and some talks'.
The then Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) leaders were present in the discussion, presided over by former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University A F M Yousuf Haider.
Explaining the history of Awami League Mirza Fakhrul said, "Awami League has a history that the party does not believe in democracy and cannot tolerate whenever anyone says it. We (BNP and other opponents) also want election. We believe that without election change is not possible, and those who believe in it also believe in democracy."
"We see from our past experience that elections could not be free and fair under ruling party governments. If elections are held under the Awami League regime, it is never possible that those will be free and fair."
He requested the country's intellectuals and a section of newspaper editors to see by themselves what happened on the court corridors.
"Please go and see how the opponent leaders and activists appeared in the courts. Judiciary has now become such a system that if the High Court grants bail, the lower courts block it."
"The Ministry of Law has formed a cell that is working to give punishment to the opponents by giving speedy verdicts. Those who are working for a positive change of the country's fate have to go to the courts," he alleged.
Meanwhile, BNP has chalked out its mass procession programme - to start at 2:30 pm tomorrow (Saturday).
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in a press briefing at the party's Naya Paltan office on Thursday said a mass procession - organised by BNP Dhaka north city unit - will start in front of Better Life Hospital in Rampura area and will end in front of Naya Paltan party office after parading Abul Hotel (Malibag), Malibag rail-gate, Mouchak, Malibag intersection, Shantinagar, Kakrail, and Nightingle intersection.
