Govt may shift Khaleda to Keraniganj jail soon

Thursday, 28 March 2019

The government is weighing the option to transfer Khaleda Zia from the old jailhouse on Dhaka's Nazimuddin Road to the new jail at Keraniganj, the home minister has said, reports bdnews24.com.
It would not be possible to keep anyone in the Old Dhaka jail once the work to turn it into a museum begins, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told a programme at Ashulia on Wednesday.
"So we are considering taking her to the new jail at Keraniganj," he said.
He did not specify any date for the transfer, but said, "It's almost ready. We can do it whenever necessary."
The inmates of the old jailhouse were shifted to the new Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj two years ago.
The government has kept the BNP chairperson, sentenced to up to 17 years in jail, as the lone inmate in the old jailhouse since February last year.
The party has complained about Khaleda's shabby jail cell it says is infested with rats, bedbugs, cockroaches and even poisonous pests like scorpions that are making her sick.
