FE Report
Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque Monday said the government will take move for setting up an API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) industrial park shortly to boost drug production.
He said this to the leaders of Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) at his office at the secretariat.
"My ministry is okay. I will convince the industry ministry to go ahead on the issue." Mr Ruhal said.
"Propose a suitable site for API park, and other issues to set up API industrial park," the minister told the BAPI leaders.
He also said the government will also take move for setting up of an international drug testing laboratory in the country as local drug manufacturers have been facing hurdles while they take move to export their products due to lack of international laboratory.
"Give me a detailed plan for setting up of an international laboratory and I will take necessary steps on the issue ," Mr Ruhal added.
BAPI leaders at the meeting pledged that they would give a detailed plan relating to setting up of an international laboratory within next six weeks.
Currently, there is no international laboratory excepting individual small sized laboratories.
Mr Momenul Hoque, BAPI senior vice president, told the FE: "We need API park and an international drug testing laboratory to give the pharma sector a big boost. The minister pledged to give us policy and other support for these projects."
Mr Ruhal said the government is actively considering making the drug administration a department to enhance its capacity.
BAPI leaders have been urging the government for long to upgrade the drug administration.
However, earlier the government earmarked Boushia in Munshiganj district for setting up an API park at 200 acres of land. But the BAPI leaders said the site is not suitable for drug production.
Mr Momenul said they will propose a suitable site for the API park shortly to the government.
