Govt moves to utilise CBM of Jamalganj coalmine

The government has moved to utilise coal bed methane (CBM) to be extracted from the country’s deepest coalmine at Jamalganj in Bogra to meet the country’s mounting energy demand.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (PEMR) Nasrul Hamid inaugurated Tuesday the feasibility study work for the extraction of coal bed methane adjacent to Jamalganj coalmine at a function as the chief guest, a senior MoPEMR official said.
Three core holes would be drilled and testing on core samples would be carried out under the study.
The consultant for the study will estimate the reserve of coal bed methane and recommend production test holes with locations if commercially-recoverable gas is found available in the coalmine.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Hamid said the government is working to implement Vision 2021 and 2041 by utilising all potentials.
“The reserve of natural gas is depleting fast. To ensure availability of energy, the government is working to utilise different energy sources like liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), coal and renewable energy,” he added.
State-run Petrobangla is conducting the feasibility study at a cost of Tk 233.78 million to utilise coal bed methane of Jamalganj to diversify the country’s energy sources.
Officials said despite having five coalmines with total reserves of around 3.0 billion tonnes, coal extraction is limited to Barapukuria in Dinajpur.
