Govt mulls administrators at dist, upazila levels

Friday, 22 June 2007

The government is contemplating appointing administrators to district and upazila parishads to make these two local government institutions more dynamic.
However, no such decision has been taken to this effect so far, LGRD and Cooperatives Adviser Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal told BSS at his office Thursday.
Pointing to legal aspects of appointing administrators to the two local bodies, the adviser said there is no legal barrier to appointing administrators to district parishads.
But as regards upazila parishads, there is neither specific provision for appointment of administrators to upazila parishads nor any bar to appointment of the same, he added.
In this case, the constitution of the country states the local government institutions will be run by elected representatives. A High Court verdict said elected representatives would hand over power to the next elected representatives.
The adviser said at present there is no elected chairmen or representatives in the upazila parishads. Under such circumstances, the matter of appointing administrators to the upazila parishads, until the elections are held, will be looked into, he added.
