The government is conducting a study to start rationing for class four employees apparently struggling hard to survive thanks to continued hike in commodity prices, officials said Monday.
It is also planning to introduce OMS for police, Ansar and VDP (Village Defense Party) like that of garments workers to facilitate their survival.
"Ministry of Food and Disaster Management at a recent meeting has decided to scrutinise the scheme and prepare a report on its fruits before offering the facilities," said a senior government official.
The food planning and procurement committee has planned to assess the project in detail in the shortest possible time.
The food ministry has also decided to prepare a list of the persons to be benefited by the government's move to supply food grains at a minimum price or 'free-of-cost,' the official said.
The ministry will include the disable, senior citizens in the list and take help of the national identity card to find out the beneficiaries, he added.
The committee has decided to disburse additional 10,000 tonnes of food grain among the armed forces, police, BDR and other law enforcing personnel under the food for work programme in 2009-2010 fiscal, the official said.
The government departments concerned will have to submit their respective action plans for the project to the food ministry, which they want to implement with the allocated food grains under the food for work programme, he said.
"We have decided to procure 1,50,000 tonnes of paddy and 2,00,000 tonnes of Aman rice in the current year. The paddy will be directly procured from the farmers," he added.
The government earlier has fixed prices of Aman paddy and rice at Tk 14 and Tk 22 respectively. Aman procurement period will expire in next month that started on December 7, 2009.
