Govt must give back people's voting rights: BNP

AL won't be able to defeat the democratic-minded people, says Dr Moyeen Khan

FE REPORT | Monday, 29 January 2024

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Sunday that the ruling Awami League (AL) would not be able to defeat the people and it (government) must give back people's voting rights.
Urging the party members not to lose their morale, BNP Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan said "The Awami League (AL) government must give back people's voting rights. They (AL) won't be able to defeat the democratic-minded people."
He also said, "BNP could not do anything significant to stop the election on January 7, 2024 as per their desire. Nonetheless, there is no reason to be frustrated."
He made the comments while speaking at a discussion titled 'Way forward to dissolve the illegal parliament of dummy election and formation of a neutral caretaker government for holding afresh neutral and participatory nation election' at the National Press Club.
Gonoforum and Bangladesh People's Party organised the event in the capital.
"Awami League made jokes with our (BNP) black-flag procession. They (AL) may lose their sense as they considered that black-flag procession is only a symbol of mourning. They (AL) have killed the country's democracy that is the biggest cause to mourn," he said.
"BNP doesn't like to indulge in violence; rather the party wants to bring back democratic environment in the country. BNP believes in peaceful politics. BNP didn't inflict oppression on the opponents while in power. The opponents are now being more oppressed by the ruling Awami League," he maintained.
"It's not possible to suppress the democratic-minded people by the barrel of gun. Our peaceful movement would continue until the fall of the government," he went on.
"Awami League and BNP are two different political parties having different characters. What Awami League does BNP never does. BNP is a democratic political party," he continued.
Mentioning that democracy is not an easy thing, the former minister (Moyeen Khan) further said they (BNP) are struggling against a state power to restore democracy in the country.
