Govt-NGO cooperation in livestock sector needed

Wednesday, 3 October 2007

Speakers at a workshop recently underscored the need for cooperation between the government's Livestock Directorate and NGOs to develop the livestock sector in order to fight extreme poverty in the country.
They also stressed the need for proper training of the staff and ensuring regular supply of vaccines and medicines.
The workshop titled "The joint role of the Livestock Directorate and Brac in improving the livelihood of the ultra poor people" was organised by Brac under its "Challenging The Frontiers of Poverty Reduction - Targeting The Ultra Poor (CFPR-TUP)" programme and held at Brac's auditorium in the city Saturday.
Brac Executive Director Mahbub Hossain presided over the workshop which was organised by Brac Advocacy and Human Rights Unit (BAHRU). About 65 people including 40 livestock officials and veterinary surgeons from across the country attended the workshop.
Rabeya Yasmin, programme chief of Brac's Ultra Poor Programme said their poverty alleviation programme was different from other such programmes because assets instead of micro-credit were awarded to the target families under this programme. The assets were mostly livestock animals-cattle and poultry-and the grants were followed up by strict monitoring and supervision to see that the target families succeeded in raising them and were using them to come out of the extreme poverty situation they were in. This was not all.
Senior manager of CFPR-TUP Wajedul Islam Pahlwan presented a paper at the workshop that mentioned a number of problems in the livestock sector like inadequate supply of vaccines and other essential drugs and the requirement of skilled personnel.
Others who spoke at the workshop included project chief of Brac Agro & Salt Industries Md A Saleque, Brac Micro Finance director Sabbir Ahmed Chowdhury, director general of Livestock Directorate Sunil Chandra Ghosh and director of livestock (Extension) Shanti Ranjan Das.
