Govt out to cripple judiciary: 20-party
Wednesday, 27 August 2014
The BNP-led 20-party alliance Wednesday alleged that the government has got desperate to have a judge impeachment law in place through an ‘unrepresentative’ parliament in its last-ditch effort to cripple the judiciary.
“Why is the government hurriedly trying to amend the constitution again to empower such a parliament which the country’s people don’t accept and which has no representation of people to impeach judges?” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, according to a news agency.
Addressing a rally, he further said, “The intention behind the move is very clear that the government is trying to put the last nail into the coffin of the judiciary and establish its final control over it.”
The Dhaka city unit of the 20-party alliance arranged the rally at the Jatiya Press Club protesting the government’s move to re-empower parliament to sack judges by abolishing the Supreme Judicial Council.
Earlier Tuesday, the alliance staged demonstrations across the country on the same issue.
Addressing the rally, Fakhrul said the government has taken the move so that no judge can independently give their well-thought-out verdict against the government. “Controlling the judges by intimidating to remove them is the main reason behind the decision.”
The BNP leader claimed that if the current parliament gets such power the door for justice will be shut. “We must resist the move.”
