Govt paves way for holding UP, pourasabha polls

The government Monday paved the way for holding elections to union parishads and pourasabhas by approving proposals to amend the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act 2009 and the Local Government (Pourasabha) Act 2009, reports UNB.
The 64th cabinet meeting of the present government held at the PM's Office with Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina presiding also approved the National Hajj Policy (2010-2014) and the Hajj Package for 2010.
Besides, an agreement signed between the Bangladesh government and the Russian Federation on use of nuclear energy for peaceful works, the SAARC Agreement on Trade in Services (SATIS), and a Bangladesh-Kuwait agreement between the two countries' Defence Ministries were also approved by the cabinet.
Briefing journalists after the cabinet meeting, PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the tenure of the union parishads ended in 2008.
