Govt planning reduction of traffic jams in city: Ashraf

Tuesday, 15 September 2009

LGRD and Co-operatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said that the government has taken various steps to reduce the traffic jam in the city to a tolerable level.
"The government has plans to construct flyovers, elevated expressways, underground rails, mono rails and ring roads in order to reduce traffic jam in the capital city".
He said this while replying to a question from Salma Islam in the Parliament Monday, reports BSS.
The Minister said only seven to eight per cent areas of the city are now roads that should be minimum 25 per cent. This is the main reason for traffic congestion in the city, he said.
Besides, high-rise buildings in residential areas, especially in Dhanmondi, Gulshan and Banani are increasing loads on roads. Instead of two families living in a house, about 20 families are now dwelling in the same building and their vehicles are crowding the roads, he added.
To ease traffic jam, he added, new satellite towns could be established around Dhaka city as over 12.5 million people are now dwelling in the capital.
He said three organisations, RAJUK, DMP (Traffic) and BRTA, are working to control traffic movement and the government has instructed the concerned departments to take effective measures in order to ease traffic jam.
He also said co-ordination between these three organisations should be established for better management of traffic.
If the mobile court act after enactment could help the administration take effective measures to check illegal parking in the city, the traffic jam would have been reduced, he added.
Besides, he said, establishment of unplanned CNG stations is also causing traffic jams in the city.
