Govt plans to expand DCC area, says PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday said in the Parliament that the government had a plan to expand the area of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC), as it appeared that the capital was overcrowded to the extent that it could be termed a crisis, report agencies.
Replying to a question she said that Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan (1995-2015) had been formulated for the 590 square miles 1528 square kilometers under RAJUK domain.
This plan covered the northern border of Gazipur municipality on the north side, Dhaleswari river in the south, Bangshi and Dhaleswari rivers in the west and Sitalakhya river, part of Sonargaon thana and Meghna river on the eastern fringe.
She also said that approval of Detailed Area Plan for Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan was "under active consideration of the government".
Prime minister said her government had taken various measures including creation of a tourist police to ensure safety and security of local and foreign tourists.
Responding to another question during the PM's question-answer session, she told the house that steps had been taken to take integrated programmes involving all stakeholders for expansion and development of the country's tourism sector.
