Govt plans to initially set up public libraries at 100 upazilas: Azad

Friday, 3 April 2009

Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad Thursday told the Jatiya Sangsad that the government planned to initially set up public libraries at 100 upazilas selected on the basis of the size of their population. Currently there were public libraries at 64 districts, reports BSS.
"Currently there is no public library at the upazila level," he said responding to a private members' resolution brought by Awami League lawmaker Sarah Begum Kabori suggesting setting up of public libraries at all upazilas.
But, he said, information about the availability of land was sought from the Upazila Nirbahi Officers of 100 upazilas while on receipt of information proposals would be formulated with advice from the Planning Commission for government approval for setting up the libraries.
The minister said at the district level, only 19 public libraries were constructed on their own land while work was underway to construct public libraries on their own land in 45 more districts.
Kabori withdrew her resolution following the minister's statement but in a lighter vein expressed her willingness to visit the public libraries at the upazila level after their construction.
