NILPHAMARI, Dec 30: The government has taken an initiative to develop the infrastructure of Saidpur Railway Workshop at a cost of Tk 1.22 billion (Tk 122 crore).
Sources said, the railway workshop built in 1870 on 110 acres of land has the potential to build passenger coaches, wagons and assortment of spare parts to meet the requirement of the Bangladesh Railway.
According to railway sources, the workshop had 10,000 workers and employees in its pay-roll, now the workforce has been reduced to 2,700.
The carriage construction shop built in 1968 had the capability to construct carriages at a cost less than 50 per cent of the imported coaches.
But in 1992 the workshop was closed and the number of employees and workers retrenched on golden handshake.
At present there are over 3,000 residential quarters for the workers, half of which are illegally occupied.
