Friday, 3 April 2009

Minister for Labour and Employment Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain Thursday said the government is pledge- bound to ensure welfare and protect the interest of the labourers, reports BSS.
He said this while exchanging views with a delegation of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) at his office while Chief Executive of BELA Advocate Syeda Rizwana Hasan led the seven member delegation.
The BELA delegation discussed various aspects of ship breaking industries at Sitakunda in Chittagong.
Mosharraf said the government would take steps after discussion with the Vessels Owners’ Association to protect health and safety of the workers and keeping the environment pollution free.
The delegation also informed the minister that the labourers work in a risky and unsafe condition while unloading goods from foreign vessels and tankers. Environmental safety was not considered in ship breaking and unloading of goods, they added.
