Govt prepares list of 98 SoEs for privatisation

The government has prepared a list of 98 state-owned enterprises (SoEs) for privatisation, sources said.
Of the SoEs, they said, 25 are from jute sector, 22 from textile sector, 27 from steel engineering and miscellaneous sector, 14 from sugar and food sector, and 10 from chemical sector.
The objective of the current move is to strengthen the industrial base of the country through privatisation of the SoEs providing necessary incentive package and post-transfer supports, the sources said.
They said another motto of the move is employment generation in the country.
Sources said the SoEs despite having tremendous potentials are getting sick due to lack of working capital, debt burden and problems in marketing, quality management, maintenance, procurement and distribution and capacity utilisation.
The privatisation process will get momentum after amendment to the privatisation policy, which is under process, a senior official said.
He said the privatisation regulation 2007, which is also expected to be approved by the Council of the Advisors soon, will also hasten the process.
The SoEs to be privatised under the Textile Sector are Tangail Cotton Mills Ltd, Kariline Silk Mills Ltd, Engineering Industries Ltd, Ahmed Bawany Textile Mills Ltd, Chittaranjan Cotton Mills Ltd, Luxminarayan Cotton Mills Ltd, RR Textile Mills Ltd, Amin Textile Mills Ltd, Darwani Textile Mills Ltd, Olympia Textile Mills, Zeenath Textile Mills Ltd, Monno Textile Mills, Fine Cotton Mills, Satrang Textile Mills, Kokil Textile Mills, Meghna Textile, National Cotton Mills, Kurigram Textile Mills, Magura Textile Mills, Noakhali Textile Mills Ltd, Bangladesh Textile Mills and Chisti Textile Mills Ltd.
