Govt prepares to evacuate Bangladeshis from Iraq

Friday, 20 June 2014

Bangladesh is preparing to evacuate its nationals from trouble-hit Iraq, “if necessary”.
Minister for Expatriates' Welfare & Overseas Employment Khandker Mosharraf Hossain has said they had already done “preliminary works” in this regard.
He, however, said that government has no plan to evacuate them at this moment.
“They (Bangladeshi nationals) are not being targeted. So we are not thinking of evacuating them at this moment,” he told BBC Bengali Service.
He said they were discussing the issue with the International Organisation of Migration (IOM).
The Bangladesh mission in Baghdad has opened hotline for any support of its nationals and the embassy would help repatriate if anyone wished to return home.
The foreign ministry said they were monitoring the situation closely.
“The Government of Bangladesh will take all necessary measures for the well-being of Bangladesh nationals there,” it said in a statement.
The foreign ministry is maintaining close communication with Bangladesh embassy in Baghdad as well as the neighbouring Bangladesh missions in Iran, Kuwait, Jordan and Turkey for the “safety and security” of its nationals in Iraq.
