Govt provides Tk 67.52b subsidy in fertiliser

The government would give a subsidy of over Tk 67.52 billion (6751.67 crore) in fertiliser and Tk 2.16 billion (216.63 crore) in diesel during the current fiscal year (2008-09), Agriculture Minister Motia Chowdhury informed the House Tuesday, reports BSS from Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban.
Replying to a question from Jamaat lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad, the minister said under the programme the government will spend Tk 43.24 billion (4,323.75 crore) as subsidy for urea, Tk 13.90 billion (1,390.35 crore) for TSP, Tk 7.03 billion (702.73 crore) for MOP and Tk 3.34 billion (334.84 crore) for DAP fertiliser.
The minister said as per the estimate of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) the total demand for diesel in the irrigation season is about 10,831.66 lakh litres.
Awami League government handed over power to BNP in 2001 with a total production of food at 2,69,06,000 tonnes, which was increased only by one-lakh tonnes in the fiscal 2001-2002.
"In the next 2002-2003 fiscal year the country witnessed minus growth in food production with a total output of 2,68,68,000 tonnes, " the minister said in reply to questions from other parliament members.
