Govt providing subsidy to import essentials: Azizul

Tuesday, 28 August 2007

Finance and Commerce Adviser AB Mirza Azizul Islam said, despite higher prices of commodities in the international markets, the government had to give huge subsidy to import essentials for keeping their prices at tolerable levels, which is "creating a tremendous pressure" on the budget.
The adviser said this while distributing cheques of grants among 45 non-government organisations (NGOs) under NGO Foundation at a function in the city Monday, reports BSS.
The adviser said the government was providing huge amounts of grants and donations for the recent flood affected people and the releasing of funds for the purpose was also creating pressure on the budget allocations.
Islam said NGOs are playing an important role in alleviating poverty and micro finance is helping a big segment of the poor people to cross the poverty line. He said two per cent people are crossing the poverty line every year in Bangladesh.
The adviser underlined the need for increasing transparency in implementing welfare-oriented programmes.
NGO Foundation was working for improving the efficiency of NGOs with the financial assistance of the government.
