Govt purchasing Aman rice targeting 4536 mts in Jhenidah

JHENIDAH, Feb 9: The government has purchased 4,472 metric tonnes (mts) of Aman rice at Tk 32 per kg as of Sunday against the procurement target of 4,536 mts in six upazilas of Jhenidah during this season. Over 98 per cent of accumulation target has already been accomplished.
District Food Department sources said the Aman rice procurement drive which began here on November 18, 2014, will continue until February 28, 2015. The collection drive is being conducted through 374 millers.
The sources further said the rice procurement targets of 2,177 mts, 502 mts, 253 mts and 498 mts under Jhenidah Sadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur and Moheshpur upazilas respectively have already been achieved.
Meanwhile, 633 mts of rice against a procurement target of 652 mts in Shailakupa upazila and 408 mts out of a target of 454 mts in Harinakundu upazila have also been purchased.
The authorities concerned said they procured rice at Tk 29 per kg and wheat at Tk 27 per kg during the Boro rice and wheat procurement season last year.
Controller of food of Jhenidah Shudhangshu Howlader told the Financial Express that the government has a stock of 14,854 mts of foodgrains, of which 13,809 mts are rice (including Aman rice) and 1,045 mts wheat at the local supply depots (LSDs) under the district.
