Govt seeks lists of all defaulting officials

Thursday, 23 October 2008

FE Report
The government has sought lists of all those government officials who did not submit their wealth statements by February 28, 2008.
The finance ministry has asked all concerned ministries and departments to furnish lists of the officials within next seven days on an urgent basis.
The ministry issued an order Monday directing the concerned ministries and departments to provide separate lists of those officials who submitted their wealth statements and who did not.
In the order, it said: " Some of the officials did not submit their wealth statements within the time-frame, which is a violation of government's order and is considered misconduct."
There are nearly 1.5 million government officials in the country. The government in August last year directed all those officials to submit their wealth statements to their respective ministries, departments and directorates within a specific time.
The Ministry of Establishment had issued a circular in this connection.
Last date for submission of wealth statements initially was December 31, 2007, which was later extended to February 28, 2008.
The government took the decision aiming to gear up its on-going anti-corruption drive as well as ensure accountability and efficiency in the government service, a finance ministry official said.
According to a code of conduct of government officers and employees, framed in 1979, a government officer/employee has to submit statements of his or her property and assets, both movable and immovable, to the government from beginning to retirement of service, he said.
