Govt seeks more time from court

The government has sought one year more time from the High Court to introduce vehicle tracking system in the country's hundreds of motorised vehicles to stop stealing and control high speed.
The High Court issued a rule on June 25, 2009 giving the government one year time to introduce vehicle tracking system (VTS) or any other comparable device in all vehicles to control their movement.
It was assumed that after introduction of the system, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) could easily lessen incidents like stealing, reckless driving and road mishaps.
Officials said the BRTA sent the prayer to the Attorney General's office in the first week of June seeking the time extension as no significant progress could be made to introduce the new system in the country. "Vehicle tracking system is a new system in our country. It is not easy to introduce it for all vehicles in a year," said a BRTA official.
He said during this year, a technical expert committee, formed to provide necessary opinions to the government on the technical sides of the device, has made recommendations after holding meetings with all stakeholders including tracking professionals.
But, the officials said, the VTS introduction could not make progress due to lack of fund as no donor responded to the BRTA's project despite a proposal was sent to Economic Relations Division in 2009.
"We feel the need of introducing the new system but we could not do it as we do not have any expertise, technological support or any feasibility study to introduce the device in all vehicles," said BRTA Chairman Ayubur Rahman Khan.
