Govt seeks UN support in Hadi murder probe

Bangladesh government seeks assistance of the United Nations in investigating the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a traumatic issue that incites sporadic mayhem.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh's permanent mission in Geneva formally approached the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on February 6 with request for technical and institutional support to ensure a credible investigation and establishment of justice in the case.
A prominent activist and spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha and one of the organisers of the July uprising, Hadi was shot dead in Dhaka during an advance poll campaign.
In an official note verbale sent to the OHCHR, the mission sought the UN human rights office's cooperation in conducting the investigation in line with international human-rights standards. The communication was made following instructions from the foreign ministry, officials said.
A message issued by the Bangladesh mission in Geneva stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would be informed "immediately upon receiving any response" from the OHCHR.
Sharif Osman Hadi, described by his supporters as a key organiser of the July movement and a vocal advocate for political change, was killed under circumstances that have triggered public concern and demands for accountability. The case has drawn attention from civil- society groups, who have called for an impartial and transparent investigation.
In its communication, the government reiterated its commitment to identifying those responsible for the killing and bringing them to justice.
