Govt sends 10,000 tonnes of rice for Nepal quake victims

The last convoy of trucks carrying a total consignment of 10,000 tonnes of rice for earthquake victims in Nepal reached Kakarvitta Friday morning.
The consignment was handed over to Kamal B. Thapa, Assistant CDO, Jhapa district and stored in warehouses of Food Corporation of Nepal in Birtamod and Chandrakuri, according to the ministry of foreign affairs (MoFA).
The government had sent 521 truckloads of rice since May 6 after the cabinet meeting decided to send 10,000 tonnes of rice and adequate drinking water to Nepal as humanitarian aid for the earthquake victims, said a press release issued by the MoFA.
In addition to rice, the government and other agencies had sent various items as humanitarian assistance which included 850 tents, 254 pieces of tarpaulin, 20 rolls of polythene, 66 plastic mats, 6,500 litres of bottled drinking water, 6,700 kgs of medicines and medical equipment, 90 kgs of cotton, 45 kgs of bandages and 10 bottles of Savlon.
Besides, 1,750 litres of bleaching powder, 77 cartons of ready-made garments, 2,300 blankets and various kinds of biscuits and other dry food which were sent to Kathmandu by special flights of the Bangladesh Air Force on April 26, May 01, May 03, May 07 and May 09.
A 30-member medical team from the Bangladesh Army also returned home on May 9 after providing treatment to more than 3,000 quake victims in last 13 days. The team worked in Bhaisepati and Lalitpur areas.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu working with several private organisations had distributed relief materials in different parts of Lalitpur and Dhulikhel as well as several villages in Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot and Gorkha. The children of the embassy officials who formed volunteer groups were distributing relief goods among earthquake victims staying in different camps.
A number of non-governmental organisations and associations including BRAC, Bangladesh Bankers' Association and Pran had been engaged in providing the earthquake victims with medical assistance and relief materials.
Besides, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB), WaterAid Bangladesh, Rupantor Bangladesh, Nazrul Parishad, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and staff members of the ministry of foreign affairs as well as officers and employees of Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo had donated relief materials to the Embassy of Nepal.
