Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Saturday that the government has sent the country's democracy into exile.
BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan made the remark while addressing a discussion titled 'Role of the professionals in the ongoing peaceful movement to restore democracy' at the National Press Club in the capital.
United Lawyers Front organised the discussion with Vice-chairman of BNP Jainul Abedin in the chair.
"Democracy has been sent into exile from Bangladesh. Politics of power and money is now controlling the country. The government has tried to label the opposition party as a terrorist organisation. But their (government) attempt didn't succeed," he said.
"The country's people don't have voting rights in the absence of democracy even after 52 years of the country's independence," he added.
"If anyone speaks about freedom of expression and democracy, he or she might be forced into disappearance. Did we fight in the War of Liberation for this?" he questioned.
He further said that their ongoing movement is between unarmed people and a party backed by state power.
