Friday, 20 November 2009
To stop misuse of valued natural gas by domestic consumers, the government is set to introduce pre-paid metering system in residential areas within next two years, reports BSS.
"The government is set to stop misuse of gas in domestic areas, we cannot ask our consumers to stop the use of gas but we could ask them to be rational in using the valued natural resources as we could produce many things from it and it is non- renewable."
M Mohsin, secretary of the Energy Division said this while speaking at an agreement signing ceremony at the Titas Bhaban in the city Thursday.
Mr Mohsin asked the Titas officials for proper utilisation of the system. However, Titas authorities have stopped giving new connection to the consumers from last month, as there is massive shortage in gas supply.
"Transparency, accountability in operation, better monitoring system and delivery of services will be improved following launching the pre-paid system," the energy secretary said.
Initially the meter would be installed in Dhanmondi area, to see its pros and cons and examine its feasibility, the BUET authorities would carry out the pilot project, MA Aziz Khan, Managing Director of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company said.
The total number of Titas Gas consumers is 1.4 million. According to the energy ministry, the country is producing 1,900 to 2,000 mmcfd gas, of it 750 mmcfd is consumed by the power sector, fertiliser sector are using 230 to 250 mmcfd gas and the rest of the amount are being used by the residential and commercial consumers.
However, to materialise the idea, the state run company has signed a Tk 45 million project with BUET Thursday to install 5,000 pre-paid meter at Titas board room in this regard.
The meter would be installed after completion of the feasibility and within next two years.
The energy secretary asked the officials to go for special drive against the owners of multistoried buildings and apartments and connections will be snapped who failed to pay the gas bill regularly.
Director of BRTC Dr M Towfiqul Anwar and Chairman of Petrobangla Dr Hossain Moonsur also attended the signing ceremony.
