Govt should raise allocation for research, DU VC opines

DU CORRESPONDENT | Wednesday, 12 June 2024

A seminar, titled 'Budget 2024: Expectations and Achievements', was held at Dhaka University (DU) on Tuesday.
In the programme, former planning minister and current lawmaker M A Mannan said, poverty has not developed in a day. There are many reasons behind it.
"A substantial amount of money goes to a group outside the revenue. Lease facilities are being given to retain them."
Advising the government to be more frugal, he said frugality does not mean reducing costs, it means spending properly. The country's condition can be improved, if the budget money is spent cautiously.
DU Vice-Chancellor A S M Maksud Kamal said the government should increase allocation for research for improvement of meritocracy.
"In this year's budget, Dhaka University has got an allocation of about Tk 9.00 billion, whose major share is for infrastructure development. The country's best university has been allocated Tk 200 million for research, which is only 2.2 per cent of its total budget."
"Money laundering is the (root) cause of the country's economic problems. Recently, we've found that there are about 1,100 companies of Bangladeshis in Dubai. Money is being laundered to various countries through such companies," he noted.
