Govt should stop BT brinjal cultivation: Speakers

JESSORE, Mar 24:  Speakers at a meeting on experimental cultivations of BT brinajl have urged the government not to go ahead with the programme for the sake of the welfare of the people from probable threats on health.
Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association arranged the meeting at Jessore Press Club on Monday morning.
Professor Afsar Ali, former principal, Jessore Government MM College chaired the meeting while it was attended among others by Khairul Umam, noted social activist, Ahsan Kabir, general secretary, Jessore Press Club, left-leaning party leaders and social activists Zillur Rahman Bhitu, Mehediur Rahman Tutul, Sarwar Hossain, Mahfuzur Rahman Mukul, Benzin Khan, Rebeka Parvin, journalists Farazi Ahmed Sayeed, Saifur Rahman Saif, Tauhid Zaman and farmer Shamsuddin.
Pavel Partha, researcher, presented his research papers in the meeting.
It was banned in India and Philippines. Being benefitted by multinational company Monsanto the government signed a deal with three companies. 'The farmers as well as the people are in the dark about the deal', the speakers added.
