Govt step against corruption

Friday, 7 March 2014

The National Pay and Services Commission (NPSC) deserves kudos for recommending a hike in salary structure for government officials and employees to such an extent that it could be able to help prevent corruption and encourage productivity of public servants. It will also ensure transparency of the employees.
The commission will estimate six family members for each of the government employees while a four-member family was taken into consideration earlier. The commission has decided to recommend a time-befitting and proper salary structure for the government officials and employees. It will also recommend a suitable method for consolidating salaries of the government servants keeping pace with inflation.
Although low salary is one of the main reasons of corruption of government employees, there are some other issues. Nepotism, threat from the influential quarters, politicisation of public offices, corruption in political parties etc. are among those. In Bangladesh, corruption and other forms of weak governance are impediment to the reduction of poverty. So, corruption must be eradicated at any cost. The government should pay attention to these problems also. Besides, the honest employees should be honoured and awarded in order to encourage fair practices.
