Govt takes projects to turn BR into profitable organisation: Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the House Wednesday that the government has undertaken a number of projects to turn Bangladesh Railway (BR) into a profitable organisation through modernisation and making it time-befitting, reports BSS from Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban.
Replying to a question raised by BNP lawmaker AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan, she said the ongoing projects include turning metre gauge line from Joydevpur to Dhaka into dual gauge and Tongi- Bhairab Bazar section and Laksam Chinki Astana section into double line, purchasing 50 BG and 50 MG passenger coaches and 55 container wagons, rehabilitation of Pahartali Workshop and modernisation of Chittagong Station Yard.
The Prime Minister said the projects to be undertaken include construction of an Inland Container Depot (ICD) with all modern facilities at Dhirasram, rehabilitation of Syedpur Workshop, Kanchan-Pachagar section and Mymensingh-Jamalpur- Dewanganj section, purchasing two cranes for post-accident rescue operation, expansion of railway line from Dohazari to Cox's Bazar and expansion of rail line from Fatullah to Jessore including setting up rail line on the proposed Padma Bridge, construction of rail bridge across the Jamuna river side by side with Bangabandhu Bridge, turning Akhaura-Laksham section into double line, setting up Dhaka-Laksham Cordline, purchasing tank wagon for transportation of aviation fuel, expansion of rail line from Bhatiapara Ghat to Barisal and development of signalling system for running more trains between Dhaka and Tongi.
