The government has chalked out measures to improve electricity supply across the country in the coming Ramadan to mitigate people's sufferings, said officials.
The power ministry hopes that electricity generation would reach to around 4,200 megawatts (mw) from the existing 3,900 mw by shutting some gas-guzzling factories including the re-rolling and steel mills during peak hours.
Some 50 million cubic feet (mmcf) of natural gas could be saved for use in power plants by shutting these mills, the ministry hoped during an inter-ministerial meeting Tuesday.
"Petrobangla will sit with industry leaders to identify those units that would consume less gas during Ramadan responding to the government's call," State Minister for Power Brig Gen (retd) Enamul Haque told the reporters.
The three fertiliser factories that have been shut in last several months would remain inoperative during Ramadan too to facilitate increased supply of gas for power plants.
The meeting also decided to monitor strictly that no outlets remain open beyond 8:00 pm thrashing the demand of the shop owners to let them open their shops until 9:00 pm.
"We will follow the Labour Law that prohibits opening of shops beyond 8:00 pm," said the minister.
