Govt thinks crisis is over but it deepens: says BNP

2,000 party men arrested as part of the depoliticisation move: Fakhrul

FE REPORT | Monday, 13 May 2024

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday that the government thought that the crisis prevailing in the country was over rather it has deepened.
He made the remark at a press briefing at the party chairperson's political office at Gulshan in the capital.
The press briefing was called to disclose the decision taken by the standing committee of the party.
"Courts awarded punishment to many leaders (BNP) arbitrarily. BNP strongly condemns that. Punishment was given without hearing. Still many leaders are now languishing in jail. The punishment was given as part of the ongoing process," he said.
"Police arrested over 2,000 leaders and activists of BNP as part of the govt's depoliticisation move. The motive behind the arrest was to eliminate opposition political parties. Court is the last resort for the people to get justice but none gets remedy from there (court)," he continued.
About finding poisonous substances in 572 Indian products, he said that each country should check standard and safety of imported products after their arrival in the respective countries.
He said that imported products should not be allowed for marketing for public purchase just after the arrival of the consignment in the country as 121 Indian products were also found containing substances harmful for human body in 2022 and 2023.
Despite that the sourcing country (India) of the products did not take any measure to remove faults of the products.
Hong Kong and Singapore imposed restrictions on selling of Indian MDH and Everest companies powered spices after detecting cancer creating Ethylene Oxide substance.
Singapore has ordered Everest company to withdraw their powered spices from its (Singapore) market.
"Considering the prevailing situation, the meeting (standing committee) observed that Bangladesh should strictly examine each of the imported products before releasing them to the markets for public purchase," he maintained.
Mirza Fakhrul said that imported products (to Bangladesh) should not be allowed for marketing just after the arrival of the shipment without examining the products either by Bangladesh Food Safety Authority or the government departments concerned.
Replying to a question, he said, "The government made the country a failed state in a planned manner. A country becomes failed state when the backbone of its economy gets broken and political environment gets polluted. The whole country turned into a big anarchy," he said.
