Govt to adopt steps to overcome adversity of climate change

Sunday, 27 September 2009

The present government is working to adopt necessary measures to overcome the adverse impacts of the climate change due to global warming caused by the developed countries, reports BSS.
The government has allocated Tk 7.0 billion in the budget for the FY10 to mitigate the impacts of the climate change and it is also working at the global forum to create opinion on the issue.
Lawmaker Sanjida Khanam from Dhaka-4 constituency said this as the chief guest while inaugurating a citizens' meeting titled "Bangladesh National Meeting on Citizens' View on Global Warming" in the city Saturday.
Sanjida said although developed countries are mainly responsible for global warming, least developed countries like Bangladesh are the most affected countries, so Bangladesh has to play a strong role at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) to be held in Copenhagen in December this year.
Besides motivating the international community for taking effecting measure on the climate issues, she said, the government is also initiating steps domestically to reduce losses and damage due to natural calamities. The government would take effective measures to rehabilitate the affected people, she added.
For overcoming the situation, she said, private level and international cooperation is essential, as it is not possible for the government to solve the problem alone.
INCIDIN Bangladesh organized the citizens' meeting. Executive Director of INCIDIN AKM Mustaque chaired the function. Executive directors Ratan Sarkar and AKM Masud Ali were present.
In his speech, Mustaque said the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) will be held in Copenhagen in December this year to negotiate climate change issues and the decisions taken at the COP15 will shape the global climate policy for years to come.
World Wide Views on Global Warming (WWViews) has initiated a campaign to influence the policy decision to be taken in the COP15 and for this purpose a programme is being implemented in 68 countries around the globe, including Bangladesh.
The participants gave their opinions and votes on four topics on climate change, which will be disclosed at a press conference today (Sunday).
