CHITTAGONG, Aug 09: The government has decided to free the Customs authority from any hassle of onboard inspection of goods by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institutition (BSTI) in a bid to expedite quick unloading and delivery of imported cargoes from ships at Chittagong Port to ensure uninterrupted supply of commodities during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
The decision came when Commerce Minister Faruk Khan visited the Chittagong Customs House Sunday morning.
"I'll ask the BSTI to get their quality test done on samples collected from the market, instead of collecting samples from on board ships," he said.
The government gives top priority to quickest possible supply of goods to the people during the holy month of Ramadan, he said.
Earlier in a meeting held at the Customs House, Customs Commissioner Farid Uddin Chowdhury said customisation has become easier following introduction of automation, but there are other problems such as delay in BSTI testing that hampers quick unloading of goods.
The customs commissioner informed the Commerce Minister that the Customs House had earned a revenue of Taka 149.62 billion (14,962 crore) in 2008-09, about 30 per cent of the total revenue earnings of the country.
