Govt to be ousted thru mass movement: Fakhrul
FE REPORT | Monday, 21 August 2023
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday urged the government to stop repression on the opponents, resign immediately and hold free, fair and participatory elections under a neutral caretaker government.
Otherwise, the government to be ousted through the wave of mass uprising to help restore people's democratic rights, he warned.
"The exit of the government by public movement is now a matter of time. The government should realise public sentiment and resign immediately to pave the way for holding elections under a neutral caretaker government," Fakhrul told the media at a press briefing at the party chairperson's office in the capital's Gulshan area.
He said that the government was desperate seeing the movement by the opponents.
He alleged the government for tortures on the opponents by its own cadres and members of law enforcement agencies.
He said that BNP along with like-minded political parties and people of different professions have been continuing their peaceful movement to save the country from the hands of the current government.
Fakhrul also said arrests of acting member secretary of Dhaka metropolitan city south unit of BNP Tanvir Ahmed Robin along with other party leaders without warrant from Naya Paltan BNP office area and attacks on peaceful programmes of BNP in Habiganj, Narayanganj and other places could never be a normal democratic behaviour.
He demanded immediate release of detained senior joint general secretary of Dhaka University unit Chhatra Dal Mominul Islam Jisan and other leaders of the party.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the report published in Ananda Bazar Patrika regarding India's message to US on Bangladesh is baseless.
"The report is not authentic and has no source. We (BNP) are yet to get any source of the report," he said.
BNP on Sunday also said they will continue their ongoing movement until realising their demands.
Meanwhile, in another programme, Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Sunday claimed that the ruling Awami League was scattered from the outside world.
He also said that the government has sent some BNP leaders to jail.
He made the comments at a human chain programme seeking immediate release of detained joint convener of central committee of Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal in front of party's central office in the capital's Naya paltan area.
