The government will build as many as 18 multi-storey residential buildings for the Bangladesh Police personnel across the country as the force is facing housing crisis, officials said on Monday.
Police said nearly 95 per cent of its personnel does not have any government accommodation facilities, although they are an important machinery of control of the state.
The Police have undertaken two separate projects for constructing 18 multi-storied buildings at an aggregate cost of Tk 13.61 billion.
The housing project for the law enforcement agencies comes after similar initiatives for civil servants.
The ministry of home affairs has recently sent the project proposals to the Planning Commission (PC) for securing the approval.
"Police is the state's sensitive force. They and their family need secured accommodation due to their nature of job," Gazi Mozammel Hoque, additional director general of Police (Development) to the FE.
"But more than 95 per cent of the force does not have such residential facilities," he added.
If the police force and their family members do not have secured accommodation, their services they render to the state will be hampered, he insisted.
Mr Hoque said that they had plans to build more residential facilities for the police force from the low-ranking personnel to the top-level officers.
According to the Bangladesh Police, it has only 2,605 units of residential facilities for the forces and their families in Dhaka city against the demand for 27,373 units.
Similarly, only 6,522 units of residential facilities are available for police forces across the country against the requirement for 144,712 units, it said.
Bangladesh Police has undertaken the construction project for nine residential buildings for the police in Dhaka metropolitan project at a cost of Tk 7.93 billion.
It has also taken up another Tk 5.69 billion project for constructing nine residential towers for Bangladesh Police at different places across the country.
The nine towers, each of 15 to 20 storey, will be constructed in Narayanganj, Gazipur, Sylhet, Cumilla and Chattogram areas by June 2022.
Besides, nine other 20 storey residential buildings will be constructed in Dhaka metropolitan areas by June 2022.
