Govt to buy two rescue ships for BIWTA

The government will buy for BIWTA two powerful heavy duty rescue ships with a capacity of 250 tonnes weight each with a view to lifting up sunken ships that create obstruction in water ways, thus keeping the water way safe. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Member (engineering) Firoz Ahmed and Daewoo International Corporation Executive Vice President Chan Kun Han signed an agreement on behalf of their respective organisations in this connection in presence of Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan at his office, said a press release. These two rescue ships will be included in the BIWTA fleet within 20 months from now. Each of the ships will include two crane barges and two high-powered tugboats which will cost Tk 3.56 billion. Of this amount, Korean government will provide loan worth Tk 2.27 billion and Bangladesh government will provide Tk 1.28 billion.
