Govt to connect all public hospitals with IT network: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday said her government would take steps to connect all public hospitals and healthcare centres with Information Technology (IT) network side by side with modernising their services to help the patients consult with specialist physicians, reports BSS.
In view of this, initially telemedicine was introduced in eight hospitals and web-cam services were launched at the district level hospitals, she said in Parliament while responding to lawmakers' queries during her weekly question-answer session.
Recently computers were supplied to all upazila hospitals along with Internet connection, the Prime Minister said adding the patients from now on may take advices from the specialist physicians free of cost from Dhaka.
She said a total of 18,000 community clinics would be constructed across the country to reach better healthcare services, particularly maternal and childcare services, to the doorsteps of people.
The Prime Minister said the Awami League government during its 1996-2001 period had undertaken the National Health and Population Sector Programme (NHPSP) under which it had planned one community clinic for every 6,000 rural people.
But the subsequent BNP-Jamaat alliance government after coming to power suspended the programme, she said while responding to a question from treasury bench member Begum Nur Afroz Ali.
The present government after coming to power following the December 29, 2008 election revived the NHPSP and already launched operation of 9,722 community clinics in the country.
She said 3,551 doctors were already appointed on ad-hoc basis in the public hospitals and clinics. Appointment cards have also been issued for 1,445 nurses and 6,347 health assistants at the field level, she said.
The Prime Minister said the government has undertaken a project, namely, "Revitalisation of Community Health Care Initiative in Bangladesh at a cost of Taka 26.67 billion to provide healthcare services to the people from the health sub-centres in rural areas.
She said the government would set up cardiac surgery department and burn unit in all medical college hospitals to made the services available in all district areas.
