The government is planning to start construction of 22,000 flats at an estimated cost of around Tk 41 billion for medium and low-income people at Mirpur in the city.
"We have finalised the project and submitted it to the higher authority for approval," Md. Abdul Quyum, chairman of the National Housing Authority (NHA), told the FE Sunday.
Meanwhile, he said, steps have already been taken to prepare the land for the apartment buildings at the project site.
When asked the NHA chairman said the construction work of the project could start by this year.
The construction of all flats, in phases, is scheduled to be completed by 2012, he said.
Quyum said each flat of 1000 and 800 square feet size will cost about Tk 1.8 million to Tk 1.9 million.
The booking money might be equivalent to one fourth of the price, he said adding the rest of the amount should be paid by installments in five years.
The NHA chairman said all required facilities, including swimming pool, health club, playground and park, will be available there.
The construction of flats on government land in Dhaka aims at meeting the housing problem in the city, he said.
He said: "Rising price of flats makes it difficult for the low and middle-income people to own a living place. We hope that with the implementation of such a mega project in the city the housing problem will ease."
Apart from this, he said, the government is also actively considering to construct 350 flats in port city Chittagong.
"We are also planning to allot plots in Moulvibazar, Sylhet," NHA chairman said.
However, the government is planning to raise the prices of residential and commercial lands under the housing and public works ministry and their transfer and conversion fees in Dhaka and others parts of the country.
When asked, NHA chairman said the new land prices will help government narrow the widening gap between its previously fixed prices and the present market rates.
However, an official source said about 11 per cent of the dwellers in the city has their own residence.
