Govt to continue support for neutral EC: PM

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina said her government would continue its all-out support for upholding the independence and neutrality of the Election Commission (EC), reports UNB.
She reaffirmed government stand when Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda called on her at the Prime Minister's Office Thursday afternoon.
The PM observed that a strong and independent EC was an indispensable institution of a democratic country.
"The government will continue to provide all necessary cooperation in further strengthening the EC," she said.
During the hour-long meeting, CEC Shamsul Huda apprised the PM of the activities of the EC, which held the crucial general election on December 29 in the process of transition to democratic rule from the state of emergency.
He requested the PM to take step to transfer the house of CEC to the EC Secretariat from the domain of Public Works Department (PWD).
In reply, the Premier assured him of taking necessary measure.
Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Secretary Mollah Waheeduzzaman and Press Secretary to the PM Abul Kalam Azad were present.
