Govt to create 3m jobs in manufacturing sector

The government has planned to create job opportunity for nearly 3.0 million people in the country's manufacturing sector in the Sixth Five-Year Plan (SFYP) for fiscals 2011-15, said a member of the Planning Commission Wednesday. The commission member (general economics division) Dr Shamsul Alam said manufacturing sector will be prioritised in the SFYP, as the sector is much more effective, comparing to the other sectors, in creating newer employment opportunities. Mr Alam said in 2015, the country's total employment is likely to reach 61.6 million, where its growth is projected at the rate of 3.2 per cent, and unemployment rate would reach 3.7 per cent. The number of labour force would reach 63.7 million by this time. "In 2015, the job opportunities in manufacturing sector will be 9.7 million, 22.0 million in agriculture sector, 2.9 million in construction sector, and 27.0 million in services sector," he said. He said these at a seminar titled 'Solving Unemployment Problem: A Way Forward.' The programme was jointly organised by Dhaka School of Economics, Bangladesh Economics Association and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation, at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city. Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) executive director Dr Mahbub Hossain chaired the programme. Education, Social Development and Political Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Alauddin Ahmed addressed as the chief guest, and Dr Shamsul Alam presented the keynote paper. Dr Alam in his keynote paper showed that at present only 22 per cent of the country's employed labour force is engaged in the formal sectors. The remaining 78 per cent is still engaged in informal activities.
